About Us

Field Of Membership

The Houston Highway Credit Union was chartered by the state of Texas in December, 1952, to serve the employees that worked in district 12 of the Texas Highway Department. At the time, this included about 2,000 employees in Houston and the seven surrounding counties. Since that time, the number of employees and counties have decreased, and they presently have less than 1400 employees. In 1991, when all the state chartered credit unions were required to qualify for the federal insurance, there were a couple of small credit unions in our area that could not qualify. Our board voted to offer membership to those members (Wilson Business Supply and Mosher Credit Unions). At the present time, we are extending membership to SEGS (Select Employee Groups) located within a ten mile radius of our office.

Who Can Join

Any employee of any sponsors (employers, companies, or associations) listed in the current field of membership. Also, any family member (mother, father, sister, brother, grandparents, in-laws, cousins, etc.) of a member is also eligible. Effective January 1, 2005, our field of membership has been expanded to include persons who live or work within a 10-mile radius of our office.

How To Join

Just complete an account agreement (membership card) and deposit at least $5. You will need your current drivers license and social security card.

Terms Of Membership

Once you have qualified and made your first deposit, you may remain a member for life, as long as you never cause a loss to the credit union. We have many retirees and ex-employees that are still active in our credit union.

Are Deposits Insured

Yes, up to $250,000 per person (just as it is in a bank or S&L) by an agency of the federal government, National Credit Union Insurance Fund. IRA funds also carry an additional $250,000 insurance in addition to any other deposits the member may have.
